SPECIAL SECTION

Remembering Italian Canadians Interned During the Second World War

This is the second in a series of two special sections commemorating the internment of Italian Canadians during the Second World War. The first appeared in Accenti 23 (Fall 2011). In 2009 the Canadian Government created the Community Historical Recognition Program (CHRP), inviting organizations to submit proposals for projects that acknowledge this dark chapter in Canadian history. At the start of the Second World War, the Canadian government of the time ordered the mass arrest of thousands of Italian Canadians when Italy declared war on Great Britain, fearing that unidentified operatives would sabotage Canada’s war effort from within. No one who was arrested was ever formally charged with any crime, much less convicted, and everyone was eventually released, but the scars of the upheaval remain – and the debate continues to this day over whether the government’s actions were justified. The project undertaken by the Association of Italian Canadian Writers (AICW) in partnership with Accenti Magazine and Guernica Editions, will publish two companion volumes of essays, articles and creative works that will examine and commemorate the events that surround the internment of Italian Canadians during the Second World War. The volumes will be available in Spring 2012.
